Meditation Garden
In the beginning, God said, “Let there be a meditation garden!”
We are often told to “stop and smell the flowers”, but how often do we actually pause to contemplate a flower, or a butterfly, or the leaf of a tree? How often do we look at something and truly see it?
Some of us do manage to take time out of our days to walk around our neighborhoods, or through a park, but instead of being fully present to the beauty and mystery of everything around us, we often move at a determined pace, perhaps merely for exercise, all the while keeping our minds busy with thoughts of the past or the future. When we keep thinking, planning, and judging, we usually miss the splendor of God’s kingdom, and fail to feel and appreciate the wonder of life.
God is available to us at every moment, and in the simplest of things. We do not have to have some great, powerful mystical experience in order to know that we are always in God’s presence, on holy ground.
Imagine yourself sitting on a comfortable bench, listening to the gentle trickle of water from a fountain, in a quiet and peaceful environment – a place for personal reflection, relaxation, meditation, and spiritual renewal. Can you envision yourself in such a place? Can you feel the peace and serenity of it? Does it not feel like holy ground?
Such a peaceful place is available to you right here in St. Louis, in the Meditation Garden at Unity Church of Peace. One of God’s most wonderful creations is the beauty of nature. The garden consists of several plant beds, each with a variety of colorful and fragrant flowering plants, shrubs and trees, balanced with tall graceful grasses. The front of the garden is graced with several varieties of rose bushes.
A host of magnificent winged friends – butterflies, birds, even angels - are pampered and nourished in the garden as well. Many special plaques have been donated and placed among the trees and plants of the garden, in memory of loved ones, or in commemoration of special events.
A curved, solar lighted pathway leads visitors from the sidewalk to the entrance of the garden, where a bench sits in the shade, providing a feeling of privacy, as well as a clear view of the water as it trickles down from a nearby fountain. Another bench sits under a pear tree, on the opposite side of the building, offering rest and relaxation following a meditative walk around the sacred circuit, known as The Labyrinth.
Please come and let peace enfold you in our wonderful Meditation Garden, at Unity Church of Peace, where you can find a bit of heaven right here on earth!
“Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” (Genesis 28:16)
